Phonics Screening Check 2025
In Year 1, children have to sit a Phonics Screening Check. This is a national test that all children have to do at this age. It is
administered by a familiar adult in school. The purpose of the test it to assess how many sounds children know and can read in words.
The test is made up of real words and nonsense words. Nonsense words are made up words that are known to children as ‘alien words’. These words do not make sense, but include the sounds that children are familiar with. Find examples of nonsense words in the practise materials.
The children will sit the Phonics Screening Check at the beginning of June 2025.
