Phonics is a really important part of the Year 1 curriculum and children are assessed at the end of Year 1 using the Phonics Screening Test. This is a national test and all the children in Year 1 must take the test. To prepare the children for the test we use the Read Write Inc phonics scheme. The children are familiar with this scheme and you may hear them talking about 'special friends', 'Fred talk' and 'Fred in your head' when they are reading or writing.
There are three different sets of sounds that the children work through, starting with set 1.
Common Exception Words
These words will be known to the children as 'Red Words', meaning that they do not use their phonics to Fred Talk them but must know them in order to help them to read and write.
Please practise reading and writing these words at home!
