Phonics

 

Phonics is a really important part of the Year 1 curriculum and children are assessed at the end of Year 1 using the Phonics Screening Test.  This is a national test and all children in Year 1 must take the test.  To prepare the children for the test we use the Read Write Inc phonics scheme.  The children are very familiar with the scheme and you may hear them talking about the 'special friends' when they are reading or writing.

 

There are three different sets of sounds that the children work through, starting with set 1.

 

 

It is important that children can read a mixture of 'real' and 'alien' words to show their knowledge of the sounds. Below is a link to some useful documents that can help your child practise at home, in preparation for the Phonics Screening Test.
