In Reception and Year 1, children learn to spell as part of the Read, Write Inc. phonics scheme.
From years 2–6, we use the spelling shed program to teach spelling. Each year group is given a set of spellings to learn each week, which link to the spelling patterns for their year group. They are tested the following week. Your child will have the opportunity to practise these spellings during school time but they will also need to practise them as part of their home learning.
Common exception words are statutory spellings from the national curriculum that do not follow usual phonic patterns. In each year group, children need to learn the spellings of these words. A copy of the words for each year group can be found below:
Years 1 and 2 common exception words
Years 3 and 4 common exception words
Years 5 and 6 common exception words
By the end of Year 6, children are expected to be able to spell words from all lists.
