  • Writing

At St. Matthew's writing stems from a writing purpose which naturally derives from a text, experience or prior learning. The writing outcome is the piece of writing children complete at the end of the learning journey. The writing purpose and outcome are designed to be engaging, purposeful and vehicles for children to learn and write creatively, accurately and with increasing confidence and flair.

Hook – A lesson to engage the children in the writing purpose of the learning journey.

Look – Children identify the key text and language features for the piece of writing (the writing outcome) they will be completing.

Compose & Rehearse – With a focus on oracy, children are taught to compose and rehearse sentences orally under the ‘writing’ purpose (to explain, to describe, to instruct etc.) At St. Matthew’s, we aim for fluency in speaking, in order to lead to better writing, as well as playing with language in the composing of ideas.

Power-ups (several lessons) – This stage of the journey consists of a series of lessons that teach children the writing skills required to successfully complete the writing outcome (as identified in the look lesson).

Plan – A lesson teaching note-making and organising ideas in order to reduce the cognitive load in the 'write' lesson.

Write (Draft) – Lessons which provide modelled writing and supported practice.

Edit and Improve – A lesson for reflective practice to find and correct errors and improve writing.

Celebrate: Show Off Writing – Here the children 'show off' all they've learnt in the learning journey by independently planning and writing their written outcome according to the writing purpose.

Spelling & Handwriting – Weekly, children have 30-minute spelling and handwriting lessons.
