In Year 1, we love reading!  Both of our Year 1 classrooms have exciting book areas full of different books for us to read.  Reading is so important because we use it in every lesson.  

Home reading books are sent home each week with the children and are changed weekly.  Please take the time to listen to your child read and sign their Reading Log so that we can see their excellent progress! 

When reading with your child, you can use the questions located at the back of the Read, Write Inc. books to quiz their understanding of what they have read. You could discuss different words and ask them varying questions throughout, such as 'what do you think will happen next?', 'how do you know...?', 'why is --- feeling ---?'. Encourage them to take the information directly from the book!

It is very important that your child can comprehend what they have read whilst building their speed and fluency.

There are also some great free ebooks available on Oxford Owl and you can choose the same colour band as your child's home reading book so that it is pitched at their reading ability.  Parents, you will need to register to access the free online books.  Click on the link below:
